East New Britain claimed gold in men’s and women’s softball at the PNG Games in Kimbe yesterday.
In what was a mere formality in the competition, East New Britain thrashed neighbours West New Britain 20-2 in women’s competition and the men beat West New Britain 9-2.
The East New Britain women continued their form to hammer Madang 11-1 and their men beat Madang men as well to claim the gold medal.
Madang will now meet West New Britain for the silver and bronze medal play-off as there are only three teams in the softball competition.
Sports competition manager Moses Tolingling said despite hiccups, he was happy that they had completed the matches in the true spirit of sports.
He urged the PNG Softball Federation to work closely with the PNG Games Council to promote the code by supporting and encouraging teams to take part at this level.
“PNG Games is the only competition where raw talents can be exposed to national selectors. Unfortunately, there were no representatives from the softball federation except for Peter Chalapan who attended the game as compliance manager for softball,” he said.
Tolingling said there was a lot f talent in the three teams that took part in the competition. Unfortunately ,big centres such as NCD, Morobe and the defending champions, Kavieng in women’s division did not attend the championships to defend the title.
Mecthil Raymond of Team East New Britain said she was pleased with the result as they came prepared for it.
