EAST New Britain is looking at establishing a sister-city relationship with the Fujian province of China.
This follows a recent visit made to Fujian by Governor Nakikus Konga, provincial administrator William Matava and National Fisheries Minister Patrick Basa.
Konga said they had some promising discussions with Chinese political leaders.
“We had a very fruitful discussion on the possibilities of establishing a sister province with theirs,” he said.
Konga believes that East can learn a lot from Fujian – a leading tourism province in China – with revenue reaching ¥300 billion (K8.92bil) a year.
“The (Fujian) province’s total revenue from tourism is ¥300 billion annually and they want to assist us develop the tourism sector to at least capture one percent of their market,” he said.
Konga said a memorandum-of-understanding was signed between the province and Zhonghong Fishing Company to establish a fishing loining plant under the build operate and transfer concept.
He said another two major fishing companies in China had expressed interest in investing in the province.
“Both companies have expressed a big interest in investing in Est New Britain, provided that our government provides them with conducive environment and land as our equity in the project,” Konga said.
