THE East New Britain Development Corp (ENBDC) has been awarded a cocoa export trading licence by the Cocoa Board of Papua New Guinea.
ENBDC is the business arm of the provincial government and has been the managing agents for the ENB Cocoa and Copra Co-operative Society Ltd, which trades as Kada Lama.
ENBDC general manager for agro-business and special projects Roland Kerina said the export of cocoa under the licence had now added to the current purchase and export activities of copra and coffee produced by members in the province.
Kerina said ENBDC believed that with their emergence into the export markets would offer a better alternative in price competitiveness, supported by a rebate payment system for the growers.
He said the awarding of the licence to the company was a milestone not only for the company but also for the government and the people of ENBP.
PNG Cocoa Board noted cocoa farmers and other unlicenced operators had been processing cocoa beans without considering the quality requirement of cured cocoa beans.
A statement from board said: “This was very bad and therefore the board wanted to remind cocoa farmers to keep the proper way of preparing cocoa bean products for the export market.”
