WESTERN Highlands and Enga students at the University of Papua New Guinea are encouraging their people involved in an ethnic clash in Port Moresby to live peacefully.
The recent fight between people from the two provinces living in the National Capital District claimed four lives.
UPNG Western Highlands Students Association’s Joel Palam and Enga Student Association president Chris Kipalan are encouraging the students to talk to their relatives living in the city about the importance of living peacefully together.
Kipalan called on parliamentarians to enforce the Vagrancy Act in the city. Kipalan said people doing nothing in the city must immediately be sent back to their provinces.
“The people own land, which is a valuable commodity and asset. We must work the land to earn a decent living instead of just squatting in the city looking for fast money options,” he said.
“Unemployed people must be sent back to their provinces and provincial governments must cater for them by building more technical schools and making funds available to train school drop-outs.
“All provincial governments must have strict mechanisms in place in take in the number of drop-outs instead of just sitting there and talking. Money is not a problem now and parliamentarians must be innovative, smart and responsible to solve sensitive situations immediately.”
