Enga forms committee to make peace with Western Highlands

A committee has been formed by Engans to bring peace between the people of Hagen Central in Western Highlands and Laiagam in Enga.
Enga provincial police commander George Kakas told The National that the working committee involved relatives of a man from Laiagam, Enga, who was killed in Mt Hagen recently, peace mediators, community leaders and himself as chairman.
Kakas said the committee would travel to Mt Hagen to talk with the police, peace mediators and leaders of the Jika tribe of Western Highlands to negotiate a peace deal.
“My committee wants to maintain and establish peace between the people of the two provinces and discourage more problems,” he said.
Kakas said the man who was killed was laid to rest on Saturday at his village. He said his committee would also talk with relatives of the two other people – a woman from Chimbu and a man from Tomba, Western Highlands, who was killed by Engans – to resolve the matter peacefully by paying compensation.
Kakas said Engans respected the peace process and had not attacked Western Highlanders in Wabag town. He urged the Jika tribesmen to respect Engans living in Mt Hagen.
