THE Enjeka family formed a sporting association to keep the Saiwara Valley youths at the ATS (Air Transport Squadron) in the Port Moresby North East electorate occupied in sporting activities and away from crime and anti-social behaviour.
Siblings Terry and Andrea Enjeka from Oro and who reside at Saiwara Valley, an area of land allocated by the former Prime Minister Bill Skate to the Oro community in 1994, have formed the Saiwara Sports Association (SSA) for youth engagement.
Terry said the land was originally allocated to the Oro people but people from other provinces had moved in joined their community.
“Saiwara Valley is no longer a peaceful community as it was before when only Oro people were living here,” Terry said.
“We have a mixed community now and there are a lot of law and order problems,” Andrea, the association secretary, said.
“Among many law and order problems, one of the latest issues was a fight between Oro youth with settlers from Tari terrorized people at the market including mothers at the roundabout second block, where one of them was killed.
“We have therefore decided that to address this behaviour by getting youth to come together peacefully with sport in order to appreciate each other and live togther in peace,” she said.
The Enjekas, who are passionate about affecting positive change in their community, have positions in the association have given their land for four volleyball courts to run games.
Terry, who is the president SSA, and the general secretary of the Oro Community Development Association (OCDA), said he was able to acquire funds for the setting up the courts.
“With the Apec meeting next week, we will get our youth busy with games because security is tight in the city and we don’t want our young men getting into trouble.” The association ran its soccer competition last week and are now set to start the volleyball games.
Terry said that sponsorship for the games was open and appealed to the public and companies to contact him on 79413336 or Junior Raka on 79721762 for details to help their initiative.
