Enough is enough

Letters

THE recent violence across our country is a disgrace and further reinforces an international view that Papua New Guinea is a lawless, violent and dangerous place.
And no one can argue because it is.
In recent weeks, we have seen hundreds die or be injured in senseless violence justified by those involved as standing up for a “free and fair election”.
And, through all this time, the voices of our leaders remain far too quiet.
Men, women and children killed in Enga.
Violence on the streets of other parts of the Highlands.
Women tortured by insane people in the name of one of our most respected business leaders for sorcery.
And people being murdered on the streets of our capital in broad daylight.
When will we all stand up and say “enough”?
When will we start to choose leaders who will make sure that this violence is no longer part of living in PNG?
When those contesting for leadership of our country surround themselves with thugs and killers, they are no better than those murdering people.
They should not be considered as leaders.
They are only putting their hands up for their own interests.
When our currently elected leaders participate or, at the least, stay quiet about this violence, they are just as guilty.
We should be seeing the prime minister and every senior party leader standing up and saying enough.
The majority of our people have had enough.
We are a proud nation but these events bring shame to us all.
We are a wealthy country with resources everywhere, but our people are poor, sick, scared and ashamed.
General Election 2022 was supposed to bring a change to PNG.
Instead, it has shown that since independence, our future has been shaped by selfishness, greed and violence leaving our country worse off than we were 46 years ago.
If our leaders are serious about improving the lives of our people, now is the time.
Our election process is a mess.
Our country is a mess.
What will your leaders do to change it?
We will see.
Enough of the violence and despair.
Your people, our people, are crying out for change.
