Entrepreneur highlights need for airport

A FEMALE agricultural commodities entrepreneur in Chimbu’s remote Karamui district has urged her provincial government to open up Kundiawa Airport.
Director of Efraim Organic Coffee, Helen Genai, made the call noting that millions of kina to generate internal revenue for Chimbu had been going to Eastern Highlands as they rely on the Goroka airstrip to bring their commodities to the markets.
Genai said the Simbu government needed to negotiate with the National Airports Corporation (NAC) to open up the airstrip.
“Money that is supposed to go into internal revenue for Chimbu province has been building up in Eastern Highland’s internal revenue as agricultural commodities produced in Karamui goes to Goroka town,” she said.
Genai said this issue had been the concern for cash crop farmers in Karamui.
She said they relied heavily on third level airlines to take their produce to Goroka and not Kundiawa town.
“More effort needs to be made to bring these commodities into Kundiawa to beef up the province’s internal revenue,” she said.
“Otherwise, we are building the internal revenue for Eastern Highlands as we are always selling our coffee, cocoa, peanuts, cardamom and spice products in Goroka.”
