THE Papua New Guinea Powerlifting Federation will stage its national championships from April 20-21 in Goroka, Eastern Highlands.

PNGPLF vice-president Paul Enuki, pictured, said the purpose of the event was to select lifters for the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

Enuki said the federation’s 2014 calendar was released and their were expecting some funding from the Go for Gold (G4G) Programme through the PNG Olympic Committee and the PNG Sports Foundation to stage events leading to the 2015 Pacific Games.

He said preparations for the National championship were underway an 10 provinces are expected to participate in the event.

Enuki won three gold medals in the 1991 South Pacific Games in Port Moresby and the one in Tahiti in 1995.

And was rated 19th in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Spain and 13th in the 82-kilogram division at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia in 1994.

The vice-president is also proud to welcome Hela and Jiwaka as the new members of the bational body who will be competing for the first time.

Enuki said there was a lot of talent and potential and the only way is to identify them and keep them on track for the 2015 Pacific Games was to hold regular events apart from the national titles.

He said since the passing of former president Hebou Asi he had taken it upon himself to maintain the relationship between the International Powerlifting Federation and the national body.

He said the code needed to be more accessible and user-friendly to the public and he  was taking steps to achieve that.

He said one of the steps he took was to engage KB1 Promotions as management agents to stage it programmes and activities.

He said the federation had an email address and soon would design a website.

Associations intending to participate should contact Enuki on 72092928 or Elizabeth on 73051327 or email [email protected].
