CRITICAL thinking and strong values are aspects Papua New Guinea education needs to produce  citizens who can help develop the country to prosper, US Ambassador Walter North says.

North said that when addressing students and staff members at the University of Technology, in Lae, last Thursday.

He spoke about “unburned bridges” based on a Welsh proverb: “He who be a leader should be a bridge.”

“Just as good relations between nations depend on leaders who have the wisdom not to burn bridges, the advancement of our world depends on educated citizens with the skills and moral awareness to drive change,” North said.

“Critical thinking and strong values are the bedrock of education. Men are neither beast nor angels but the educated try to nudge us all closer to the angel end of the spectrum.

“I encourage all of you to use your learning as the moral compass that can point you in a direction where you can seen openings for progress and help us to build that ‘city upon a hill’.”
