TAIWAN and Papua New Guinea enjoy a strong and prosperous relationship, according to Taiwanese trade mission representative Daniel Hu.
Hu said this last Friday when speaking at a function to celebrate the 99th Taiwanese national day at Holiday Inn in Port Moresby.
“I have noticed that the economic performance of PNG in recent years has improved rapidly and there are a lot of construction going on in Port Moresby,” he said.
“PNG also enjoys a relatively high GDP growth rate. This is a country with great potential and opportunities.
“In addition to agriculture and medical fields, we can certainly enhance the quality of joint projects and diversify our cooperation.
“Therefore, I look forward to working with the PNG government toward further progress and prosperity.”
Hu said Taiwan had transformed into a peacemaker and prosperous country in East Asia since president Ma Ying-jeou took over government in May 20, 2008.
“It is expected that Taiwan’s gross domestic product will grow by 9.2% this year, the fastest rate in 21 years,” he said.
“On June 29, Taiwan signed an economic cooperation framework agreement with mainland China.
“The bilateral exchange across the Taiwan Strait has extended from economic and transportation sectors to tourism, cultural and financial sectors.
“The tension between the two sides has already been minimised gradually in every possible way.
“Due to this emerging situation, the government of China on Taiwan has adopted a foreign policy of dignity, transparency, accountability, and pragmatism,” he said.
