The South Korean Embassy will be hosting the 7th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships at the Caritas Secondary Technical School hall on June 8.
The championship will look at showcasing and identifying local talent, and see them compete with each other before taking part in international games.
In March, four Papua New Guinean athletes were invited to train in South Korea along with 40 athletes from around the world.
Contestants of the championship will get the chance to be among 150 athletes who the Korean government plans to invite to this year, according to a statement from the embassy.
The potential for athletes to reach the international stage in taekwondo has already been realised, with the likes of Maximillian Kassman who represented PNG at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Last year, the championships attracted a crowd of 500 people who witnessed 85 players from eight clubs within Port Moresby compete against each other.
The championships are expected to attract greater participation from taekwondo athletes and clubs around the country.
Since the inception of the championships, Taekwondo PNG has only seen six clubs, with the number expected to grow.
