THE Erima suburb in Port Moresby came alive last Thursday morning as hundreds of people flocked the Christian Brethren church agency (CBCA) to witness the ground breaking ceremony of a new multi-purpose resource centre.
Present at the ceremony were National AIDS Council Secretariat (NACS) director Wep Kanawi and his manager policy planning and budgeting Moses Kaigu.
Kanawi said the construction of the centre was indicative of the Erima people’s recognition of the effects of HIV/AIDS and the serious need to address the epidemic.
“Dispela risos senta i soim olsem ol manmeri long hia i wari long laip bilong ol na long sik AIDS (it shows that the people here are concerned about the effects of AIDS on their lives),” Kanawi said in Tok Pisin.
He also called for similar resource centres to be built around the country.
NACS and its partners will fund the resource centre, estimated to cost about K500,000. Half of that amount had been paid to the building contractor, Piwa Construction Ltd.
The double-storey building would comprise eight fully-kitted resource rooms and four offices.
CBCA community services network project coordinator Thomas Kundu said the building would serve the many purposes for the church and community.
The centre would be used for:
*VCT treatment and care;
*General counselling;
*Literacy awareness;
*Youth training centre; and
*Women and children refuge centre.
