A REMANDEE, who escaped from the Beon jail a few kilometres outside Madang town, was shot and recaptured by Ramu police last Friday.
Provincial police commander Insp Anthony Wagambie Jr said Philip Kaugle from Simbu province was charged with four counts of rape, abduction, robbery and deprivation of liberty.
He said Kaugle went to Ramu Sugar where his father was an employee of the Ramu Agro Industries.
Insp Wagambie said police acted on a tip-off and stormed a house, but Kaugle tried to flee.
“Police fired a warning shot in the air and ordered him to surrender but he continued to run. He was about to jump over the wire fence into the Ramu Sugar factory when police shot him,” Insp Wagambie said.
Kaugle was sent to Ramu health centre and later referred to Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae for further medical treatment.
Insp Wagambie said Kaugle was recovering after surgery and will soon be transferred back to Modilon Hospital where he would be charged with escaping from lawful custody.
