WEST Tribe top the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League New Guinea Islands Conference ladder at the completion of round-one games over the weekend.
The Kimbe-based franchise, coached by Hans Fred, are the only unbeaten side with three wins and a draw.
West Tribe have proven to be a finals prospect after a comeback 6-2 victory over Gazelle, of East New Britain.
AROB Chebu, who have three wins and a loss, are second on the ladder.
AROB have proven to be a talented side, and will be looking to improve their position on the ladder following a recess.
“West Tribe and AROB have shown that they have good combinations,” conference coordinator Tonga Esira said.
“They have been training seriously and that is why they’re doing well.”
Esira also confirmed that the conference would take a break this weekend and resume with round two on April 6.
He described the first round of games as challenging.
However, Esira said he was pleased with the positive attitude from all the franchises.
“I feel sorry for the teams travelling but their spirits are high,” Esira said.
“I am proud of them because no matter the circumstance, they are still pushing forward.”
AROB Chebu president Justin Helele said he was proud of his club’s performance, and their sacrifice and patience living away from home for the duration of the competition.
“It’s a big ask to live away from their families and play,” Helele said.
“But we are doing all we can with what little we have to support the team because we have no major sponsor yet, so it’s a huge sacrifice.”
Conference standings: West Tribe 10, AROB Chebu 9, Radazz 4, Greengold 3, Gazelle 1
