A FORMER health worker is turning to God.The nurse who used to help the sick now hopes to heal those sick in spirit as a priest and is already in transition.

Hailing from a humble beginning in Biwat, Angoram,East Sepik, Andrew Masi took his vows last Sunday to be a full member of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) after almost 12 years of theological studies at the Bomana Seminary.

He is now awaiting his deaconship and ordination before becoming a qualified SVD priest.

Prior to that he was working as a nurse with the Catholic Church Health Services in the Wewak Diocese and served mostly in the Kaugia Sub-Health Centre in the Wosera-Gawi district. In 1988, Masi attended to a dying patient who was asking for a priest to come and give him Holy Communion.

Unfortunately, there was not priest around. The patient’s wish was for Masi to become a priest, Masi said.

Masi perceived the final few moments of the conversation with the patient on his death bed as a call from God and left his career and joined the seminary in 2004.

He kept his promise. asi’s delighted father Steven said: “My role as an earthly father to Andrew ends here and now it is the responsibility of the good Lord to guide and protect him, I have given him up to do Lord’s services.”
