Ex-mayor loses home to fire
The National, Wednesday March 26th, 2014
THE family of former Lae Lord Mayor James Khay has lost all their belongings in a fire.
Khay blamed it on an electrical fault possibly caused by the continuous power surges in Lae last week.
He said he was having a meal when the fire began from the meter box and spread quickly through the house around 5pm last Friday.
This was the second fire Khay’s family had experienced on Kapiak Street.
Khay said he had been telling PNG Power Ltd for the past nine months about a problem with the connection to the meter box and the circuit into the house.
“I was advised by PPL they will install a new easy-pay meter when the new stock arrives,” he said.
He said the house cost him K200,000 to build.
PPL acting manager service distribution, Morgan Legra said he was going to look into Khay’s claims and to respond by 5pm yesterday.
He failed to do that.
Khay has appealed to the Morobe provincial government, Lae Chamber of Commerce, Lae district, Lae City Council and charitable organisations to assist the family in any way possible.
