RETIRED Australian National Rugby League player Darius Boyd has urged Grade 4 and 10 students in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to set a goal to save money.
“Savings are needed for buying stationery, books and even computers,” the Brisbane Broncos ambassador said.
Boyd spoke as a “community partner” of BSP at the launch of the BSP financial literacy programme 2022 in the Kopkop College in Port Moresby.
Boyd joined the launch via Zoom from Brisbane.
The banking education programme will see students in selected schools in the National Capital District (NCD) take part in the programme aimed at helping school children understand the life skill of saving money, basic understanding of simple budgeting and practise making decisions on the use of their money.
BSP banking education officer Naomi Sion emphasised the need for financial literacy to be taught in schools, as it not only equipped children with banking knowledge but also develop a savings culture from young.
“We are again partnering with the Brisbane Broncos this year to help 2,000 children develop wise spending habits to achieve their savings goals.
“So far, we have nine schools in NCD confirming participation,” Sion said.
Kopkop College principal Roddy Abady said the support of committed parents would help students see the value of savings and what it means to use a commercial bank as a port for fostering a savings culture.
