Ex-soldiers back in action

THE Milne Bay government has declared a curfew and recruited 20 retired PNG Defence Force soldiers to crack down on pirates in the bay waters, provincial administrator Ashan Numa says
“We have also recalled police reservists who had been stood down on September 15, 2020,” Numa said.
“We have instructed fuel outlets throughout the province to sell fuel and oil only to registered boat and dinghy owners.
“We will ensure that 17 suspected pirates who were before the court, receive the maximum penalty as a deterrent on piracy as many people have suffered at the hands of these cruel and thoughtless few.”
Numa, who is also the provincial law and good order committee (PLOC) deputy chairman, said there was a need to prevent piracy as travel between the islands and Alotau was expected to increase following the festive and holiday season.
“The PLOC met last Sunday and imposed a curfew to control movement between 10pm and 5am and control on small crafts (boats and dinghies) travelling within Milne Bay waters,” he said.
“This means all night travel at sea are restricted.”
“Registered vessel owners are required to report to the nearest government station and district authority within 14 days to ensure compliance of registration and to look at appropriate measures, including secured travel days during the week and other interventions were followed.”
