Exec: Address welfare

Faith

THE leadership of the Boana district of the Evangelical Lutheran church of PNG (ELCPNG) wants the national church’s to discuss its workers’ welfare at its 32nd synod this year.
President of the church’s Boana district in Morobe, Pastor Sokeka Tawaman said they would like to see the church discuss the matter as at present “the church is not helping to support and grow its workers.
He said that was one thing they wanted to emphasise.”
He said the church has not come up with ways to help its workers.
“What are some of the ways it is looking at to help us? We are suffering and they are not helping us. They are sending off workers to remote areas and are not thinking of them.” Tawaman said this was a big problem which needed to be addressed.
He said all church workers in the districts of ELCPNG had not been supported well and with a lot of work pressure, many had died.
“There’s no budget to help the districts. How can you (head of district) look after your workers when there’s no budget coming from the administration.”
Tawaman said district church leaders could not look after their staff because there was no budget support yet the church workers were being forced to do things beyond their capacity.
Meanwhile, Tawaman said a group of men and women from Jiwaka walked to Boana to attend the 32nd synod.
He said their intention to walk to Boana was to experience for themselves how the first Morobe missionaries walked to bring the good news to them in Jiwaka and the rest of the Highlands region.
