THE liquefied natural gas project is one of the safest fossil fuels in world, the Papua New Guinea LNG field engineering leader, Dave Raaf, told a workshop yesterday.
The workshop, facilitated by the LNG project, was to give journalists an appreciation of how the product from the gas fields in Hela and parts of Southern Highlands’ provinces would be condensated and exported.
“LNG is one of the safest fossil fuels that can be produced. If you light a candle and get a clear glass you will see that the candle flames will leave thick black dark stains on the glass in less than 10 minutes,” he said.
“However, if you do the same with LNG you will see that there is no stain on the glass. This shows that LNG is cleaner.”
He said LNG was kept at a cool at a temperature of -160 degrees Celsius.
Raaf said that was why it could not explode into the air.
Raaf said since the operation of liquefied natural gas projects in the world there had never been any major incident except for one in 1944.
He said in 1944, a pipe broke because of the cold temperature.
He said that had been improved through modern technology which helped design special pipes that did not break because of the cold temperature of the LNG.
