THE University of Papua New Guinea third year tourism and hospitality management students hosted their 13th tourism convention on Wednesday.
The students from School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) hosted the convention under the theme “Tourism as a driving force for growth and development in Papua New Guinea”.
The convention was an academic activity organised by the students. It was held to showcase various opportunities and developments the tourism industry could bring.
UPNG vice–chancellor Prof Frank Griffin, while elaborating on the theme of the event in his welcoming remarks, said the convention set a platform for a variety of presentations to showcase how the industry could be truly a vital cause for growth and development in the country.
Griffin said the tourism industry in PNG had potential and offered a lot but was still underdeveloped.
He said the convention presented an excellent opportunity to start discussing options and processes to make a change in the industry.
“Let us think outside the box, with one goal in mind, to use the tourism industry as a vehicle to drive growth and development in this country,” he said.
SBPP deputy executive dean Ponnusamy Manohar said tourism was dependent on other factors such as law and order.
