ExxonMobil gives school something new

STAFF and children of a school in Hela are celebrating the completion of a new teacher’s quarters, a water tank and two toilets funded by ExxonMobil for K217,000.
It took the company, the operator of the PNG LNG project, five months to complete the project at the Komo Catholic Primary School.
A company statement stated that they had been working with communities in the PNG LNG project areas to improve education and health infrastructure, including the restoration of facilities damaged during the earthquake in February last year.
The is school run by the Catholic Church. It remained open despite the damage to facilities caused by the earthquake.
Field operations manager Kim Hahn commended the church and teachers for staying on to ensure students continued their education.
“ExxonMobil PNG is very happy to support the Komo Catholic Primary School and its teachers.
“Education is a fundamental building block for strong and resilient communities,” Hahn said.
“Teachers are instrumental in inspiring the next generation to be community leaders, tradesmen and tradeswomen, nurses and engineers.
“When children have a good education, it builds a bright future for everyone.”
Head teacher Michael Basse said the teacher’s quarters was important.
“Without properly built houses, students would have no teachers in school,” he said.
School board chairman Steven Telape thanked ExxonMobil PNG for the assistance.
