Face on K100 note

Letters

THE 1997 decision by the then PNG Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan to wipe out Bougainvilleans through the engagement of the Sand line International mercenaries still lingers in the hearts of many Bougainvilleans.
Yes, Sir Julius at one time traveled to Bougainville to reconcile with the Bougainville leaders.
But he never reconciled with each 250,000 individual Bougainvilleans that he wanted to be wiped out.
Among many Bougainvilleans and peace loving Papua New Guineans, Sir Julius still remains a person with blood stains on his palm.
When interviewed by the media whether he regretted engaging the Sandline mercenaries, he shocked everyone saying that what he did was right.
Now, we have Prime Minister James Marape proposing to include Sir Julius Chan’s face on a new K100 notes.
If that is going to happen, then PNG should let Bougainville go.
Meaning PNG National Parliament should ratify the results of the Referendum if Bougainvilleans want to break away from PNG.
There is no point keeping them with PNG and reminding them through a K100 note on the pain and suffering they went through from 1989 to 2001.

  • Fully agreed……the other side of the coin and so the PM can reconsider and perhaps rule this out for ever. Put something else on the note.

  • Bougainville is an intergral part of the country of Papua New Guinea. The PNG National Constitution includes Bougainville and there is no way it can break away from PNG. Period. With Sir JC to be on K100 note, it is great news. During Sir J’s time as PM, he wanted to solve a problem. It turned out nasty due to factions already existing on Bougainville well before he became Prime Minister. He has appologised to the people. I do not believe he must be held responsible for the deaths, there are many factions on the grould on Bougainville that ought to bear the blame as well.
