THE rugby league oval at Rebiamul in Mount Hagen, Western Highlands, is expected to get a facelift and proper fencing around the perimeters of the field.
The entire fencing was stripped off almost five years ago by the locals who used the iron roofing to build their houses.
Since then, there had not been any proper fencing to host games like the bemobile Cup.
The venue for the bemobile Cup was then shifted to the Kagamuga showgrounds.
Mt Hagen Rugby League president Samuel Buka said this during the presentation of prizes to the grand finalists at the Pakauwath Wilderness Lodge outside Mt Hagen yesterday.
Buka said Mt Hagen league was slowly improving and also experiencing a lot of changes.
He said with the new fencing the league could maintain its standards and also produce high quality players.
He added in the past there were no gate takings and it posed a risk for players and teams playing on an open field.
When delivering the K16,000 to the teams from the K64,000 given by the National Gaming Control Board, said this year’s competition was perfect because there was no trouble involved throughout the season.
He thanked the supporters and the teams for their cooperation.
Buka also told the clubs’ presidents that the league was improving and he anticipated good things in next year’s competition.
He said teams affiliated to the league could be proud that they would have a proper fencing for them to play starting next year.
He added that it had been almost 10 years for the league to be without a sponsor.
However, the NGCB had joined the competition with a good sponsorship package of K40,000 last year and K46,000 in this year’s competition.
Buka thanked the NGCB for its continuous support since last year.
He also thanked the teams and fans for their support throughout the season.
