Fair play clearly absent during sevens rugby
The National, Tuesday March 25th, 2014
AS a staunch supporter of rugby, I write in response to the article “Union Stern, Lae players left out of national sevens squad” (The National, March 18).
Lae, especially the Morobe Rugby Football Union, has for many years been contributing many national representatives to the national sevens team as well as the PNG Pukpuks.
It is sad for the union to learn that Lae players had resorted to violence to address a match issue.
Violence should not be condoned in any sport and it should be a lesson for the Lae players for not being selected for the national team train-on squad.
The Capital Rugby Union (CRU) should also be penalised.
Lae fielded a player from CRU team two and this may have influenced their game in some way to eventually emerge winners.
This is cheating on the part of CRU and one cannot entirely blame the Morobe players for the anti-climax to an otherwise great weekend of sevens rugby.
There was no fair play.
CRU cheated, the Morobe players reacted with violence and are now penalised.
Who were the real perpetrators?
Who is the PNG Rugby Football Union going to protect – something to think about.
