Fallen pylon disturbs internet services, Telikom says
The National, Thursday January 9th, 2014
TELIKOM said its internet services have been disrupted by a redundant path causing poor link performance on all Datec ISP links.
Voice and data services on the optical ground wire (OPGW) link between Lae and Madang have been disrupted due to a fallen PNG Power pylon along the same route.
The redundant path has been causing major backhaul issues but Telikom representatives said they were treating the outage as a critical concern.
“Telikom PNG engineers are working closely with PNG Power engineers to restore services as soon as possible,” the management said.
“Telikom PNG sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused during this time.”
This outage will be a disappointing setback to the company’s bid to enhance their internet services in the New Year.
In October last year, Telikom PNG chairman Mahesh Patel said that in 2014 Telikom would be looking to expand into fixed-line broadband and upgrading to long-term evolution, also called 4G.
Telikom announced last week that several of their engineers would be going through intensive training to help the telecommunications company reach world standards.
Telikom said all services should fully restored shortly but if customers had issues they could call the company’s 24-hour customer care helpline on 345 6789.
