Farmers want road improved

FARMERS in Morobe are calling on the Government to repair the Wau-Bulolo road.
The Farmer’s and Settlers Association on behalf of the business community and road users expressed serious concerns over the work that was carried out on the highway from the 9-Mile-turn-off through Huon Gulf to Zenag, Bulolo and Wau (Bulolo district) and Watut to Menyamya-Aseki (Menyamya).
“We presented our petition to Bulolo MP Sam Basil and then Minister for Communication and Energy in March over the deteriorating state of the highway,” Wilson Thompson said.
“Our concerns were also forwarded to the Minister and Secretary for Works including meeting with Basil and we expected an improvement in the maintenance of the road.”
The association said while the Australian government gave an initial K5 million with an additional K6 million promised under the Transport Sector Support Programme, they were disappointed that the Department of Works had gone into grass cutting and vegetation control and not in mitigation of threatening situations such as putting gabion baskets where roads were threatened by rivers.
