Farmers welcome plans to build teachers college
The National, Wednesday July 8th, 2015
PLANS by the Southern Highlands provincial government to establish a teachers college in Poroma have been welcomed by farmers in the area.
Officers from the provincial department of agriculture and livestock visited the Poroma Local Level Government last Tuesday and discovered that the area had rich agricultural soil which the proposed teachers college could use to grow its own food.
The officers were impressed by the people busying themselves in their food gardens and involved in more than two projects.
Farmer Simeon Yandawei from Poroma station said they were happy with Governor William Powi and the provincial assembly for the proposed teachers college.
Yandawei said Poroma had been known for law and order problems but today everyone was busy after seeing development changes brought by the national and provincial governments.
Department adviser Nelson Yamba said it was vital to establish government institutions in places where people were willing to accept and support them.
Yamba said the visit was to observe, analyse, provide technical advice and provide assistance where necessary. If possible, training would be made available to the farmers. He said by visiting remote areas and seeing things for themselves, DAL officers would have a clear picture of who the “real farmers” were.
