Fast food outlet supporting local suppliers

A LOCAL fast food outlet in Port Moresby has been supporting food suppliers in the past 10 years.
Highlanders Food Kai Bar director Malen Kapo said locals wanted meals prepared just like at home.
“Some expatriates too come for takeaways,” she said.
“Tourists also want to taste PNG food.
“They do not want to eat the food they have in their countries.
“They want to taste something new and local.”
Kapo said they bought garden produce from the markets at Gordon, Boroko, Kone, Waigani and 9-Mile.
Their supply of kaukau (sweet potatoes) and potatoes come from Goroka and Mt Hagen.
“We also have customers and local food suppliers from Central and the National Capital District,” she said. “We encourage them to plant more and supply more to meet the daily demands.
“We provide lunch packs for business houses and organisations who order.”
Kapo said they planned to extend the business in Port Moresby and urged food suppliers especially from the Highlands and Central to produce more.
