A FEMALE Correctional Services officer appeared in court yesterday accused of aiding the escape of convicted bank robber William Kapris and two others last Tuesday.

Hilda Gazawe, 44, of Kiono village in Chuave, Chimbu, appeared before magistrate Cosmas Bidar at the Waigani Committal Court.

She was charged with aiding the escape of prisoners Kapris, Raphael Walimini and Michael Warangu from the Bomana Prison outside Port Moresby.

Gazawe is attached with the Correctional Services medical unit at the Bomana prison.

She has been remanded at the Boroko police cell to await her next court appearance on June 21.

Warangu was shot dead after they were chased by police and prison officers in the Laloki area a few hours after their escape. Kapris and Walimini were still at large. Kapris is reportedly nursing an injury.

According to police reports, Gazawe resides at the Bomana CS compound and is

suspected of smuggling pistols into the prison which were later given to Kapris, Walimini and Warangu when the three visited the prison medical clinic on Tuesday afternoon.

They escaped between 1.30pm and 2pm through the main prison gate.

Gazawe is also accused of smuggling a mobile phone into the clinic which was given to Kapris, Walimini and Warangu who used it to make their escape.

The three used the pistols to take a male prison orderly hostage and then proceeded from the clinic to the main gate where they fled into the bushes towards Laloki.
