A FERRY belonging to a Madang-based miner helped rescue 15 people who were drifting in Astrolabe Bay, Madang, on Monday.
Captain of Ramu NiCo’s work ferry mv Carrie Charles Buai said the banana boat was drifting away when they spotted it in big swells.
He said the crew noticed some of the passengers waving a white cloth, indicating a distress call.
Twelve adults and three children were travelling to Madang from Mur village in the Saidor LLG when the boat encountered engine problems 15km off Madang.
It is understood that they were on their way to sell their vanilla.
One of the rescued passengers, Kelly Waidau, on behalf of the others, thanked the captain and crew for saving them.
“We thank God for bringing the MCC vessel to our rescue just in time, when hope was almost leaving us,” Waidau said.
