THE world’s largest online gaming tournament, the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC), has kicked off in Oceania with the first qualifying event taking place in Tahiti over the weekend.
With presenting partners EA SPORTS and Sony PlayStation, the eighth edition of the FIWC is expected to be the biggest yet.
A combination of online qualification series and live qualifier events will determine the best 23 players in the world who will then join reigning FIWC champion Francisco Cruz at the grand final in May 2012.
OFC presented the first ‘FIWC 2012 Live Event Series’ at the Radisson Hotel in Tahiti from Dec 10-11 and it was hugely successful.
A total of 64 participants took part with Kevin Duong eventually claiming the title after a thrilling extra-time win over Natua Tarati, while Yohann Ah-Wah and Thomas Tepehu took third and fourth place respectively.
As champion, Duong will go on to compete in the OFC Final in April 2012. Further qualifying events will take place across the Pacific region over the coming months and the schedule is as follows (please note these dates are subject to change):
New Caledonia: Jan 28-29.
PNG: Feb 4-5.
Solomon Islands: Feb 25-26.
NZ: March 9-11
OFC final: April 7-8
Eight players will qualify for the OFC Final with the winner going on to represent Oceania in the grand final.
