The country’s senior soccer referees have been recognised by the sport’s world governing body, FIFA, with a set of special post-World Cup uniforms.

PNG Football Association technical director, Taku Niebo and referees development officer Job Minan presented the new sets of uniforms last Friday to the referees who are under the FIFA listing.

PNG is building its referee pool with four FIFA-accredited referees and nine assistant referees who can officiate in OFC and FIFA-sanctioned tournaments.

Minan said Papua New Guinea had the highest number of FIFA referees in the Pacific who officiate in the Telikom National Soccer League.

“Of the 13 referees we have in PNG, Port Moresby has five referees, Gororka has two referees, Simbu and Alotau have an assistant referee each while Lae has four,” Minan said.

Out of the 13 FIFA-accredited referees, three are women.
