THREE people were injured in a fight between two groups in the middle of Goroka town in Eastern Highlands on Sunday morning.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Michael Welly told The National that the fight spilled onto the streets of Goroka after a woman from the Piswara settlement allegedly reported to her relatives that she had been taxed by several men from Genoka settlement when selling betel nuts in front of a shop on Saturday.
“The incident led to the woman’s relatives having a confrontation with several people from Genoka and the fight spilled onto the streets of Goroka town,” Welly said.
“The roofing iron fence around the airport premises was broken off by several men who used the fencing as shields to protect themselves.”
He said his officers were outnumbered and initially struggled to get both groups to stop fighting.
“The two groups were armed with bows and arrows and used any weapons they could get their hands on and threw it at each other,” Welly said.
“Police finally managed to contain the situation and we have blocked off access into Piswara and Genoka settlements until we come to an agreement with their community leaders.”
Welly said three people injured were recovering in hospital. He said he wanted all surrounding communities in Goroka town not to fight or endanger the public with their actions and urged community leaders to be actively resolving issues peacefully or go to the police station and ask for assistance from law enforcement officers.
“Holding the whole town at ransom because of a fight is not right and it must be stopped,” Welly said.
Goroka deputy mayor Elyvn Ben condemned the actions of the people of Piswara and Genoka and thanked police for their efforts to manage the situation.
Snr Sgt Joe Kaa and Goroka Police Station Commander acting Chief Insp Paul Nacca are working with leaders to resolve the matter.
