SOME of the Western Highlanders displaced from their homes at Nawaeb Block, in Lae, last week following a fight have returned.

Lae metropolitan commander Iven Lakatani yesterday said this followed a mediation between the factions facilitated by the community policing unit and local leaders this week.

“The situation is under control,” Lakatani said.

“Most of the affected Western Highlanders have returned.”

He said while mediation continued, police were conducting investigations to arrest those involved.

The violence which erupted after the State-of-Origin match last Wednesday, resulted in a man being killed and  property worth thousands of kina burnt.

Lakatani said police had received some names of suspects but they were yet to make arrests in relation to the killing, arson and fighting.

“We wanted to be sure who we are arresting. It’s not good taking in suspects then releasing them,” he said.
