The National, Thursday 16th Febuary 2012
MANUS have confirmed their participation in the PNG Boxing Federation professional challenge on March 3 at the Sports Inn, Port Moresby.
The islanders, under the guidance of Ron Knight, have prepared three boxers for this meet in the nation’s capital.
The three potential boxers are Jason Hayeu, Jimmy Pius and another returning to the professional scene after three years of suspension.
PNGBF vice-president Rex Kuman confirmed that Hayeu will fight with 5-Mile Hill Tops Tony “Rubberman” Waisa in the lightweight (61kg) division and Pius is up against HYBC’s Eugene “Compressor” Keto also in the same weight division.
Kuman said Wewak’s Elvin Wafiwa would take on Enga’s Johnson Kapus.
He said Tabubil’s Paul Lare, Kimbe’s Steven Meta had expressed interest to fight on the card.
“The boxers are preparing well for the event to beat their opponents for the cash prize of K1,000 for the winners and K500 for the runners-up for the start without major sponsor,” PNGBF president Nick Calibud said.
Kuman said corporate support was needed to increase the cash prizes in the next show in April at the Hideaway Hotel.
The executives have planned fortnightly fights depending on the amount of corporate support.
He said the majority of boxers were unemployed and saw boxing as a way of earning a living.
