THE second spot for Group B in the Nations Cup was thrown wide open after Fiji beat Solomon Islands 1-0 on day three of the Oceania Football Confederation tournament at Sir John Guise Stadium last night.
Fiji, who went down to New Zealand 5-0 in their opening game, welcomed the return of coach Frank Farina with a well-deserved victory over the Solomon Islanders.
The win has kept their finals hopes alive and they will be counting on New Zealand to beat the Solomon Islands by five goals or more in order to qualify for the play-offs.
Coming from a scoreless opening half, Fiji kept the pressure on the Solomons in the second-half and finally found the net through star Roy Krishna via an 83rd minute spot kick.
Krishna, who captained the side, earned the penalty after being brought down in the box by Solomon Islands goalkeeper Samson Koti.
The next Group B match is on Saturday, where Fiji play Vanuatu and Solomon Islands face New Zealand.
