THE Department of Finance last Friday launched its record management policy at the Daltron training centre in Port Moresby.
The launching was described as a milestone on the effective management of official documents and records.
Senior finance officers said the policy would strengthen and promote the department’s commitment to good governance and supporting obligations for accountability and ensuring that the rights and interests of the government, stakeholders, business partners, staff and the community were safeguarded and protected.
Finance secretary Gabriel Yer stressed that effective management, maintenance and preservation of public records and archives coincided with the Vision 2050 strategy, especially in the area of public service institutional strengthening and capacity building.
“It is appropriate for the department to realise the importance and benefits of effective records management, especially in improving transparency, accountability and efficiency.”
Yer added: “The policy encourages evidence-based governance which can effectively control corrupt practices.”
A record management unit had been created within the department to oversee the functions of documentation within each division. The unit will ensure management of all official records was consistent and all objectives of the policy were maintained.
Unit manager Brown Kapinias said: “We are training staff in record management.”
