Finschhafen building new market, airport to improve services

THE development of a new market and airport at Gagidu station in Finschhafen, Morobe, are part of efforts to improve services for the district, MP Rainbo Paita says.
Paita, who is National Planning and Monitoring Minister, made the remarks while officiating at the two projects over the weekend.
He said the work on the new fish market and the wholesale buying point would allow the district’s agricultural produce to be sold at a main buying point.
“We will be building two types of markets – one for wholesale and one for retail,” he said.
“When a farmer comes into town and wants to sell his produce in bulk, there’s the wholesale market buying point while for those who want to sell their produce individually, there’s the main Gagidu market.”
Paita said the fish market and the wholesale buying point would cost K2 million.
He said work on the district’s airport was in progress.
“I’ve tried to have the runway cleared and open for flights,” he said.
“The material for the sealing of the runway is already here and the district purchased materials for the construction of the airport terminal.”
Paita said the Finschhafen development authority had bought the terminal materials under the requirements approved by the National Airport Corporation and within the comings weeks, it would be constructed.
