Fire destroys family homes and store
The National, Tuesday 17th April 2012
THREE families are homeless after a fire destroyed their two homes and trade store at Kilakila, Port Moresby, last Saturday night.
The families are from Wabag in Enga.
The blaze started at around 11.55pm, property owner Michael Makaen said.
There were three families living on the property – Makaen, his wife and four children; Richard Manus, his wife and two children and Ian Rapa, his wife, two children and his in-laws.
There were no casualties.
The fire started from the first house’s living room and spread to the second house and the trade store.
Makaen said he woke everyone in the houses and took them all to safety.
They managed to save their vehicle by pushing it out of the yard but lost everything else.
He claimed the fire was caused by an electrical fault but PNG Power is yet to confirm this.
Makaen, a sub-contractor in the National Capital District, said the fire destroyed all his electrical tools.
He said he had a large family and it would be hard to stay with relatives. The family is still living on the property.
He has appealed to relatives, MPs and charities for assistance.
