FIRE is one of the major dangers faced daily in many communities so the knowledge and techniques to
extinguish small fires and prevent them from spreading are very important.
This promoted Ramu NiCo, the developer of Ramu nickel project in Madang, to make it a priority to conduct basic fire fighting and prevention courses at the Ramu NiCo office in Madang.
The induction was carried from Feb 13-16, with a similar induction conducted at the Kurumburaki mine from Feb 3-10.
The 62 employees – 31 from KBK and 30 from the Madang office – who attended the training are now equipped with the basic knowledge on how to properly use fire extinguishers to fight different types of fires.
Safety-trainer with Ramu NiCo, Singai Namanai, said the training was the first of its kind and would roll over to other sites given its importance.
“It is part of the safety training
that will add to the employees training matrix, just like JSA, isolation, confined space and so forth,”
Namanai said.
He said the aim of the induction was to enable Ramu NiCo employees to know basic skills to extinguish small fires and to enable employees to have competencies when the need arose.
“This part of the training is to
promote safety culture to employees so that the company will achieve
its objective which is zero harm,” he said.
“Safety first then production is the way forward to increase production and reduce costs. This training helps us to pass it on to the community so that they too know how to extinguish small fires.”
KBK staff who took part included those from the mining department, maintenance department, geology and beautification department.
Madang participants were from the corporate department, community affairs, human resources, finance and administration.
“Ramu NiCo staff at the Madang office were very happy with this training because they can now handle the fire extinguisher to fight small fires,” Namanai said.
