Fire service launch awareness

PAPUA New Guinea Fire Service (PNGFS) has launched a new awareness week programme in an effort to educate the public about fire safety.
Defence Minister Saki Soloma praised PNGFS for selfless service in doing their best despite the financial constraints.
“I am happy to know that PNGFS continues to perform its mandated function despite the challenges faced each year.
“It is hard to think of a more selfless profession than that of a firefighter.
“Given the growing density and complexity of our communities, the rise of extreme weather patterns in recent years, firefighting and rescue operations have become more complicated and challenging,” Soloma said.
He said the challenges had to be overcome by continuously engaging with communities to understand the dangers and the levels of preparedness.
“It calls for closer partnerships because fire safety is indeed a shared responsibility and not the exclusive role of PNGFS.”
Soloma said an effective strategy to combat the ever-increasing risk of fires is through ongoing awareness in communities.
He said it was his intention to bring PNGFS, the National Volunteer Service, the National Disaster Centre and PNG Defence Force to work together .
