Firecrackers are illegal, says Port Moresby Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou.
He said people usually celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year with firecrackers.
“Residents should not be using the firecrackers because it is annoying and also dangerous,” N’dranou said.
“It can also injure people or cause fire to buildings.
“Anyone caught firing off crackers are causing noise pollution and can be arrested and charged. They are also violating the explosive Act.”
Police will be out in full to ensure that the city residents celebrate Christmas and New Year in good spirit.
West Sepik police commander Chief Inspector Moses Ibsagi said police were on alert as this was the time for an increase in smuggling of firecrackers.
“These fire crackers are in high demand throughout PNG as they are used to celebrate Christmas and New Year,” he said.
