Firm develops system to address housing issue

A STEEL manufacturer and distributor in the country is developing a building system to address the challenge that home-owners face in building their houses.
Atlas Steel PNG launched three of its modular houses built at its factory and operations site at Baruni, Port Moresby, on Friday.
Port Moresby branch manager Peter Browne said they were using a technology derived from a company in Sydney, Australia, to build the modular homes.
Browne said over the years of operating in the country, they had noticed that one of the challenges for home owners was actually building a house after purchasing the kit.
“We can help supply the houses that you need, the business needs, the government needs for your home ownership,” he said.
“Our research and development does not stop. We strive to give you the best price and the best quality.
“Atlas Steel PNG is developing a system where we will fully construct your house here in the factory.
“We have been to a company in Sydney.
“We are using that technology to build modular house here.
“There will be a rolling production line across our factories here.
“When in full production, we will be selling out four complete houses per month.
“This cuts the production time down from 15 weeks to approximately three weeks.”
The houses are built from light weight steel framing with all external roof and wall covering also made from quality color bond sheeting.
Fitted kitchens, windows and doors are also manufactured here in PNG from a mixture of PNG hardwood and imported aluminium fittings.
Flooring options are either compressed fibre cement (CFC) or PNG hardwood and these are covered with the latest designs of ceramic tiles or PVC vinyl coverings, dependent on your tastes and budget.
Deputy Prime Minister Davis Steven, representing the Government to officiate at the event, acknowledged Atlas Steel PNG for its continuous support in investing in the country and its initiative to make affordable homes.
