Firm in province vows to help police with fuel
The National, Monday March 31st, 2014
POLICE in East New Britain will be given 2,000 litres of fuel every month to deal with law and order problems in the next six months.
This has been made possible by the province’s business arm the ENB Development Corporation Group.
Provincial police commander Supt Anthony Wagambie last week asked the provincial government, business houses and other stakeholders in the province to assist police with fuel for their vehicles.
Wagambie made the appeal in The National newspaper following complaints from people regarding poor police response to their complaints.
Chief executive officer William Lamur said the company was owned by the people and it was only right that the company positively respond to the appeal.
“We feel as a company for the people of ENB that community participation is a way forward to maintaining a safe environment for everyone,” Lamur said. He said the company would continue to assist police in areas wanting support.
“With the six months commitment in fuel assistance, we are certain that it will go far in helping police attend to people’s law and order problems that need immediate attention,” Lamur said. Wagambie said police were supposed to be funded by the Government but they had to ask people “to dig into their own pockets to be served by police”.
Wagambie said it was more important to be active than to be reactive.
