A NEW round-the-clock roadside assistance for motorists is now available in Port Moresby but will be extended to other districts and provinces later in the year.
Depending on membership level, the service includes help at breakdowns at no extra cost, assistance when the car is stolen, security and even help to track your vehicle down and recover it.
Roadside Assistance PNG (RSAPNG) started its operation in Port Moresby on Aug 1.
It is similar to roadside assistance RAC in Australia and AA (Automobile Association) in New Zealand.
Mainly, if you break down and are stranded, RSAPNG can get you going again and if not get you and your vehicle to a safe base.
RSAPNG general manager Adrian Brooks told The National that the company provided a 24-hour breakdown service and assistance in the event of vehicle theft.
Towing, jump-start for flat batteries, flat tyre change, basic mechanical breakdown diagnosis to get the vehicle back on the road, assistance for bogged vehicles, emergency fuel, retrieving locked keys and cutting keys were part of its services during the breakdowns.
The company can also provide a high-tech vehicle tracking system through its Geographical Positioning Satellites (GPS) tracking device, remotely disable the ignition or engine of the vehicle and provide a security escort.
It can also help retrieve the vehicle with the help of its network and police and provide transportation of victims of car thefts.
Different levels of services come with different levels of annual membership.
Full membership or Platinum Plus membership means you will have access to the entire range of services.
The platinum membership fee is K869 per annum for 24- hour roadside assistance.
Platinum Plus costs K3179 and includes GPS and all relative devices fitted in the car for tracking and recovery service.
No extra charges would apply in any case.
The company currently has a fleet of 10 vehicles, including two tow trucks, all fully equipped to get its  roadside service going.
