INLAND fish farming is gaining popularity among the people in the Mugliamp local level government, in Western Highlands, with 35 farmers recently completing a week-long course.

They received certificates after completing the course at the Maria Kwin Technical Vocational Education Training Centre at Banz in Jiwaka. Dei MP Wesley Nukundj provided a funding of K22,710.

District agriculture and livestock officer Justin Bongne said the training would greatly benefit the farmers.

“You now know how to dig fish ponds and breed fingerlings because you have the required skills and knowledge,” he said.

He urged them to develop their skills so that they could earn a living from fish farming.

Bongne is hoping to secure more funds from MPs to extend the training to others.

He urged the provincial livestock and fisheries officers to be wary of people pretending to be fish farmers who were seeking financial assistance.

He said these “farmers” had already approached and got help from the National Fisheries Authority.

Bongne said that practice should be stopped.

He thanked Dei administrator Steven Korowa, provincial livestock and fisheries officer Kevin Namba and Nukundj for their assistance.
