FISHERIES is a key social and economic development asset for Morobe, Governor Ginson Saonu said during the swearing in of the Morobe Fisheries Management Authority board of directors yesterday.
The directors approved by Sam Sewe (provincial executive council) in May and sworn in yesterday were Weti Zozingao (chairman), Geotau Kisi (deputy chairman), Kine Mufuape, Amet Fongemale, Sandy Karo, Augustine Kuso and Selep Miti. “Morobe has one of the biggest potentials in fisheries development, both on land and in the sea, with 33,781sq km of land area and 719 sqkm of maritime area,” Saonu said.
“The Morobe Fisheries Management Authority and its board of directors have a huge responsibility to harness this social and economic asset for the prosperity of the province.”
Saonu said the province’s 30 year plan, the Kundu Vision 2048, focuses on the fisheries sector and it should be the yardstick for the work of the Morobe Fisheries Management Authority and the new board.
Fisheries development in the province had attracted foreign investments in Lae, with four established canneries -Frabelle Ltd, Majestic Seafood Ltd, Nambawan Seafood Ltd and International Food Corporation, the producers of Besta.
Saonu said under Kundu Vision, the province should establish five more fish canneries and the Wagang Fisheries Wharf project.
