MOTHER-of-three Freda Galama was inspired by a fisherman from Pari village in Central to design tuna dresses to showcase the villagers’ talents.
Galama, 44, originally from Milne Bay, lived her entire life in Port Moresby and was among the women members of the Tuna Bay Association displaying designs at Taurama SME market launching last weekend.
“Our (women) have come out to showcase their hidden talents,” Galama said.
It was the first time to display her designs.
“I’m over excited and can’t wait to see my designs out there,” she said.
Husband Karo Galama is from Pari and her family are supporting her small business. The tuna dress costs K150 and normal dress K50.
If the customers supply the material, she charges K5 or 10 depending on the type of material.
Moresby South Motu Koita Women’s representative Anna Skate said other groups which displayed their designs included the Taurama Hurehure Women’s Association, Sedu Catholic Women’s Association, Survivors Sustainable Delivery Service and Sikere Tanokaka Women’s Association.
The different talents are from the Motu Koita villages in Moresby South.
“We started in Pari, to Kirakira, Vabukori, Mahuru and now in Taurama,” she said.
